Psychotic Disorders

Psychosis describes a disruption in how a person interprets reality. It can include hallucinations, firmly held false beliefs, disorganized speech or behavior, and difficulty distinguishing internal experiences from events around them.

Common signs and experiences

Possible warning signs include growing suspiciousness, social withdrawal, marked changes in sleep or self-care, confused communication, unusual beliefs, reduced emotional expression, or declining work or school performance. Psychosis can occur in several psychiatric conditions and can also be triggered by substances, medications, sleep deprivation, or medical illness.

How evaluation works

Prompt assessment considers safety, symptom onset, medical and neurological history, medications, substance exposure, mood symptoms, and cognitive changes. Physical examination and testing may be needed to rule out other causes. Sudden severe confusion or dangerous behavior requires urgent medical attention.

Treatment and support

Treatment depends on the cause and may include antipsychotic medication, psychotherapy, family education, practical support, and coordinated specialty care. Hospital treatment may be needed during an acute episode when safety or basic functioning is at risk.
