Autism
Autism spectrum disorder is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference that can shape communication, social interaction, sensory processing, interests, and preferences for routine. Autistic people have diverse strengths, needs, and ways of experiencing the world.
Common signs and experiences
Possible features include differences in conversational rhythm or nonverbal communication, intense interests, repetitive movements, sensory sensitivities, and distress with unexpected change. Some people mask traits for years, which can make fatigue, anxiety, or burnout more visible than the underlying differences.
How evaluation works
A comprehensive autism evaluation typically considers early development, current functioning, communication, sensory experiences, and behavior across settings. Information from family or historical records may be useful. Other conditions can overlap with autism, including ADHD, anxiety, language differences, and intellectual or learning disabilities.
Treatment and support
Support should be respectful, practical, and guided by the person’s goals. Helpful services may include occupational or speech-language support, therapy adapted for autistic clients, environmental accommodations, and treatment for co-occurring concerns. Medication does not treat autism itself but may be considered for specific accompanying symptoms.
