Depression
Depression is more than a difficult day or a temporary period of sadness. A depressive disorder can affect mood, motivation, sleep, appetite, concentration, physical energy, relationships, and a person’s sense of hope.
Common signs and experiences
People may experience persistent sadness or emptiness, irritability, loss of pleasure, fatigue, slowed or restless movement, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty making decisions, guilt, or thoughts of death. Some people mainly notice physical complaints or withdrawal rather than sadness.
How evaluation works
An evaluation explores how long symptoms have lasted, their effect on daily life, past episodes, safety, medical history, medications, substance use, and possible bipolar symptoms. Laboratory testing may be recommended when a medical condition could be contributing.
Treatment and support
Treatment can include psychotherapy, medication, behavioral activation, support for sleep and routines, and attention to medical or social stressors. For persistent or severe symptoms, additional options may be discussed. Anyone in immediate danger or considering self-harm should call 911 or call or text 988.
